Befrienders go through induction training so they are prepared to support the family they are matched with.
Our induction training for Befrienders runs 3 times per year. Courses run either on four consecutive Saturdays or over six weekdays (daytime or evening) and take place either in Edinburgh or Midlothian. Travel expenses and a contribution towards the cost of child care can be claimed for attendance at induction training.

- The role of a Befriender
- Listening & Communication skills
- Boundaries and Confidentiality
- Policies and Guidelines
- Personal Safety
- Child Protection
In addition, all Befrienders are invited to other training events which Home Link organises throughout the year in conjunction with other voluntary organisations working with children and families in Edinburgh. Examples of training events run recently include:
- Deaf and Hard-of Hearing Awareness
- Children living with Domestic Abuse
- Introduction to Basic Counselling Skills
- ADHD
- Children living in a Drug-Abusing Environment

Personal Development for Befrienders
Whether you're just starting out or have worked for more years than you can remember, new skills and experience aren't always easy to come by. Volunteering as a Befriender is an excellent way to:

In addition to the hands on experience gained through befriending, volunteers have the opportunity to meet with the Volunteering Officer to discuss their personal development, identify areas of interest for further development, and create a personal portfolio.
